In 1977, Chris Bonington and Doug Scott became the first mountain climbers to summit an infamous peak known as The Ogre in Pakistan. During their descent, however, Doug slipped and broke both of his legs. Chris also had a mishap resulting in several broken ribs. Doug, who crawled for 12 days over rocks, snow, and ice to make it back down the mountain, said he did so by focusing on “one feature at a time. A nub of rock, a pinnacle. Get there and then think about the next bit. Because to think about the whole thing was a bit mind-boggling.” Amazingly, both men survived.
The focus Chris and Doug displayed reminds me of the focus that Paul encouraged the Colossians to maintain in their spiritual ascent—a call to stay strong and not fall. The apostle, from prison, told the new believers at Colossae to persist in their faith in Jesus. “As you accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord, you must continue to follow him,” he wrote. “Let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught” (Colossians 2:6-7).
In order for the believers in Colossae to survive and thrive spiritually, they had to set their sights on Christ. Pressures from outside the church and false teachers within it were dangerous adversaries that could cause them to slip and fall (Colossians 1:11, 2:8). Paul wanted them to see that because of what Jesus had done, they could press on in their faith: “He forgave all [their] sins”; “He canceled the record” of their sins; “He disarmed the spiritual rulers and authorities”; “He [provided] victory . . . on the cross” (Colossians 2:13-15).
Are you distracted or discouraged today? Remember what Jesus has done, and find all you need in Him to press on!

Good words, my friend! Sometimes I think we should just spend a few weeks and wallow in the riches found in the book of Colossians. What a treasure it is. Have a blessed Easter, Tom!

Agreed, BearPair! Praise God for this precious epistle.

I do hope that as we grow we are shaken less, faith is grasp strongly. Like the climbers; however, we sometimes slip, like them it could be after great mountain top experience. Life is always throwing something there, and again like the climbers sometimes the way back takes great focus and intent, living one event at a time. My thoughts are God wants us to live a “going forward” style of life. Christ did not stay on the earth, He did not stay on the cross, He will not stay in heaven, He moves forward until we are back safely. What a Savior! He is not only risen, He is preparing more. Thanks Tom, rejoice in the payment, WBP.

Thanks for your thoughts, Gary. Yes, God desires that we continue to press on as He leads and equips. The way won’t always be easy, but God goes before us!

Keeping my eyes on Jesus means to gaze at Him and glance at anything else in my life that would threaten my faith. When I make Him my vision, I reframe everything I tend to worry about with Him as the focal point, and those things fade to the background and lose their grip on me. It’s amazing how in the light of Christ everything else shrinks to its proper perspective. Living moment by moment in His sufficient grace is what keeps me moving forward. Thanks for this encouraging post today, Tom. Good Friday to all of you at ODJ and everyone on this forum. Let’s remember how His love ran red for us today!

Yes, in the light of Christ everything else shrinks to its proper perspective! True words! Lord we are desperate to see all things on earth in the right perspective, through Your eyes and ears. We humble ask You to open our eyes and ears to see and hear as You do. Our hearts and minds get clouded with media, busyness and our own pride and selfishness. May we continually be aware of all things that cloud our vision of YOU! In Your mercy, keep us focused on You . . . . this is the only way to truly live. Praise You Jesus! Thank-you for sharing sister!!

So true, gagirllive. As we remember his sacrifice today, may it inspire us to live out his life and love before others!

Thanks Tom for this wonderful devotional!! When you said, “Let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught” (Colossians 2:6-7).”, it reminds me that “my hope is built on nothing less, than Jesus blood and righteousness. I dare not trust the sweetest frame, but holy lean on Jesus name. On Christ the solid rock I stand, all other ground is sinking sand, all other ground is sinking sand.” I know that if I live my life built on Him, that my faith will grow strong in the truth I was taught.
Thank you Jesus for dying for me so I can live for You. You have given me everything I have, everything I have ever hoped for because my hope is in You Lord, my life is in You Lord!!
And in gagirl’s words..Good Friday to all at ODJ and everyone in this forum. Let’s remember how His love ran red for us today!

Amen, Sandy! That’s one of my favorite hymns! Yes, this passage in Colossians is so encouraging to our faith – walk, isn’t it? I love the progression that is expressed: accept Christ as Lord, continue to follow Him, let our roots grow deep in Him, build our lives on Him. The result is a strong faith in the truth of this gospel and a heart that overflows with thanksgiving! Praise God!

Thank you for reminder. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. Help us Lord to more than just know these words in our minds; help us to wrap our minds around them. To truly believe with faith! To know that when we keep our eyes on You; You guide us one step at a time . . ultimately leading to victory. When I lose sight of this and forget You are with me . . . . . . in Your mercy help me stand again by Your power and love. Amen.
