Soon after a tornado disaster in the US, I saw aerial photographs of its path. Entire neighborhoods were flattened. From the high angle of the photographer’s shot, all of the wood and debris looked like scattered, splintered toothpicks, tossed violently over a wide swath of city blocks. Devastation. Wind provides an immense source of power (which is why wind- generated energy receives so much research). Whenever wind runs wild, however, it can be a frightening and destructive force.
Luke described the Spirit of God as sounding like a “mighty windstorm” (Acts 2:2) as He “filled the house where [the disciples] were sitting” (Acts 2:2). And the Holy Spirit came with power and energy. People from all the gathered nations began to hear the gospel spoken in their native tongue. The people of the city, some sneering and some marveling, stopped in their tracks to hear Peter’s explanation of the phenomenon that had taken place. The apostles, empowered by the Spirit, began to do “many miraculous signs and wonders” (Acts 2:43).
The most powerful repercussion of the Spirit’s effects was the radical new community that emerged. This community shared their possessions, yielded their lives to the teaching that Jesus had left behind, and began to live out the ethic required of all His disciples (Acts 2:43-47). This new community (what would come to be known as the church) ate meals together. They worshiped. They sang to God. They cared for the sick. They began to be a new kind of people—the Jesus kind.
Writer Inagrace Dietterich captured this well: “When the Holy Spirit transforms the life and practice of Christian communities, they demonstrate that God’s promised future has been set in motion.” We still encounter the Spirit’s wind. And the Spirit still invites us to follow.

Look back over Acts 2. What do you think are the connections between the so-called “extraordinary” miracles (tongues, wonders) and the so-called “ordinary” miracles (sharing possessions, obeying Scripture, etc.)?
Next:
Where do you sense the Spirit blowing in your life? How is the Spirit inviting you to follow and obey today?

It seems at times our lives (at least mine) can become so busy with stuff that we forget about how brief our life on earth really is and miss the point that the early church demonstrates to Christ followers today.
Thank you for the beautiful reminder.

I have no idea what you’re talking about, Mike. : ) Today, I went bike riding with my boys, out by the river. It’s those Spirit moments in our short life we must cherish.

Tonight at our church more than 20 couples will gather for a Luau Mystery event. We’ll eat together, wear flowered shirts, and be silly. Yet this same group will feed the homeless, nurture each other in recovery groups, and distribute needed goods through our Seeds of Grace ministry all week long. I’m so thankful that so many in our community continue to say “yes” when the Holy Spirit speaks to us and urges us to share life together!

Sounds like a great time, bkkesler! So often believers in Jesus are caricatured as both uncaring and not fun. You certainly have shattered both those wrong perceptions. 🙂

bkkesler, this sounds so good ! Here in Brazil we have some barbecues and we invite friends both Christians and non-Christians. It’s a good opportunity for those non-converted to see how normal we are and that Jesus makes all the difference in our lives.
Hope you have a good time tonight !
God bless you all !

Great idea, Luciana. Now I really want to visit Brazil! 🙂 The barbecue sounds great . . . but what a cool way to show God’s love to others.

Guys, you are more than welcome whenever you come.
You know, right now I am trying to help our Reverend to implement an English-spoken service, for all the foreigners who are living in Niteroi because of the oil and gas boom in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. We know many of them are out there, feeling lonely, search for an answer that is only in Jesus. Then we will have the service for the Christians away from home and for the non-Christians who just need a company. And they will certainly meet the only company we really need – Jesus.
Besides this, we have a special service, every Saturday evening, just for the young people. They sing the Hillsong songs, they listen to the Scripture and the message delivered by a young pastor like them. Many teenagers and young adults have been reached and converted just because of this service. It is called Sal e Sol (Salt and Sun).
You can have a taste of all this if you access http://www.igrejaoceanica.com.br for we have live broadcast every Saturday 8 pm and Sundays 5pm and 7:30 pm Brazil time. Hope you like it !
God bless you all !
