I’ve been learning to “cast my cares” to God (Psalm 55:22), not try and carry them myself. This means praying to Him often during the day, unloading the things that only He can handle!
The mere fact that the soon coming return of the King is getting imminent makes me excited and further compels me to do the one thing, and that is to take heed what King David had realized to be the one thing: “One thing I ask from the LORD, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the LORD and to seek him in his temple” (Ps. 27:4). – This drastically changed my prayer life.
What has transformed prayer for me is feeling very strongly that God was telling me to be quiet and actually listen to what He wanted to say. One day, I spent about an hour walking my dog in the most beautiful landscape and I was very conscious that God was wanting me to experience through using my senses some of the blessings and good gifts He has given me. I was taken on a most wonderful journey with God using my eyes, my hearing and my sense of smell to experience anew the wonders of His creation. I feel God was telling me that I have blessed you so much, now go and be a blessing to others. Now, I make sure in my prayer life, I do not do all the talking but it is a struggle because I am very chatty, to take time to listen as well.
Yes Gillian, spending time in the great outdoors just admiring the beauty of God’s mind and His grace helps me to converse with God myself. I find it very difficult to pray while in one place and so I pray mostly while walking or while I am on the bus. I find it easier to concentrate. This has helped me quite a lot.
To add onto Gillian and ajitna’s contribution, besides the sights and the feel, I have been most fortunate to savour the wild fruits (raspberry, blackberries and rosehips) that God has flourished where i live. Living in the country has enabled me to get closer to God – it has woken up all my senses to God’s wonderful creation and supply. It helps to improve the way i pray – not just for myself but for others and everything around me.
My prayer life has improved lately because I have been waking up earlier for the past several days, and I have been reading a pastor’s thoughts on self-discipline. Staying connected to God through prayer requires a purposeful use of our time…at times, we may need to make prayer appointments with God, and then show up–on time, and ready to connect!
