One interesting issue which I haven’t heard discussed in the Tiger Woods saga is the obvious double standard between men and women when it comes to extra-marital sex. Tiger’s image has taken a hit, but so far it’s assumed that after some time away to work on his marriage that he will be able to pick up where he left off. Can you imagine the same thing being true if he were a woman? How come men who sleep around with numerous girls are considered “players” while women who do the same are called some very bad names? I’m opposed to all of it, but I wonder why most cultures of the world let men off more lightly when it comes to sexual immorality. Shouldn’t we hold men to the same standard that we expect from our women?

Great point, Mike. The same concept came up several times last week in discussions with friends. I was especially struck that my girlfriends admitted to holding this double standard–leaving women with the short end of the stick. I don’t understand the reasoning behind such a double standard. Sexual immorality is just that, regardless of the gender of the culprit. But, apparently, society judges differently.

Tiger fell and I dare anyone to cast the first stone. The media is so ready to jump on make fun of and exploit someone of notoriety. The only thing that will hold that marriage together is forgiveness and the best thing the Woods family could do is get out of the spotlight.
You wonder why society hold women more accountable then men? Maybe it started at the fall of mankind and the birth of Cain and the two seed theory. Just a thought.

I would suppose it started with ‘old testament’ times when men had wives (plural), harems, and also slept with their wives servants/maidservants (we see of at least one case of this when a child was wanted).
At no time did we see a wife with many husbands, or a wife with a ‘harem’ of men…unless the men paid for services and the woman were called prostitutes.
We also know of woman associated with the ‘temple/church’ who were expected for these kinds of services. (maybe men too?)
There are still cultures in this present age that it is legal to have more than 1 wife, but the wife can not have more than one husband.
So, I do not endorse the sin or the double standard…but I can see how this thinking got started.
That is my opinion.

There are a lot of polyandry culture( woman with many husbands) in the traditional world. It exist in Tibet, some tribes in Pakistan and Africa.
One of the main reason it is practise is because some men could not afford to pay for the dowry ( bridal payment)
The only thing they could do is to share with some other men…it is weired to grasp the concept but it exist in real life.
Some say that about 30-40% of people of Traditional culture practice polyandry….

I think sexual immorality is a sin whether the culprit is a man or a woman. This goes for all sins. Society wouldn’t say that a man who has killed another person is less of a murderer than a woman who has killed another person, why is it different for sexual relations?
I also think that men should not have more than two wives. The bible says that women should submit to their husbands and husbands should provide protection to their wife… not wives. Men and women are supposed to save themselves for marriage. No where in the bible does it say that men are to save themselves for their marriages… that doesn’t make sense. Marriage should be between one man and one woman. This is the only way to keep a marriage pure and sacred.

I am new to this wonderful site. I don’t agree with Tiger’s decisions. Everybody “Media” is going on about how wrong he was for doing what he did, but little is said about these women who knew he was married and continued going about having their affair with him. They are being glorified for sleeping with a superstar and he is losing EVERYTHING. I feel sorry for his wife, but I do hope they trust in God and pull it back together. Those women will find another married man and say “YES” to an affair. They are wrong all of them.

This issue always reminds me of the story in the bible when a woman was brought before Jesus and the charge was she was “caught” in the act of adultry….doesn’t it take TWO people to commit adultry? Where was the man commiting adultry? Why wasn’t he brought before Jesus too? I’m sure this fact didn’t slip the Lord’s notice. And I try to handle these situations like I read that Jesus did. I am not sinless, I am not quilt free except by the blood of Christ, so I will not be throwing any stones. I was told to “judge not”.
Tiger Woods fell from the “grace” of the nation. We as a nation, tend to put our national figures in a “hero” statis and then scream bloody murder when they do not live up to our image. Mr Woods is a great golfer. Period. That doesn’t make him perfect in any area, although this nation tends to excpect that from him. How bout we just make Jesus our hero and praise Him for the talents he has given to others.

I have to agree with you. When we have people who are in the media we almost always put them up on a pedestal like they are the greatest person in the world, but we forget that they are humans. Humans make mistakes – they are allowed to do this. They are also allowed to repent, ask for forgiveness and move on with God as their guide. I only hope the Woods family will be able to work things out.

Our Lord was always compassionate toward those who knew themselves to be sinners. Without His grace, this man’s pain and shame could drive him to “worldly sorrow leading to death” (i.e., suicide). Let’s all pray for an outpouring of grace in the lives of the Woods, that they may have “godly sorrow leading to repentance unto life.” Buddhism cannot offer what only Jesus can.

I have enjoyed the comments posted about the Woods family. Tiger is a human being subject to temptations like all of us. I pray he comes to know Jesus and accepts Him as his personal savior. Money and fame can bring many temptations and take us down a road we never thought we would travel. I pray for his wife and kids and that somehow they can work things out and save their mariage. Many people in the Bible did awful things yet God used them for His glory. Moses commited murder. Apostle Paul persecuted Christians yet they both went on to serve God in a mighty way.

Sexual morality, sexual discipline are by far the greatest examples of who and what Jesus was an example of through the presence of God’s Holy Spirit here on earth. Satan attacks this area more then any other area with both men and women, single or married. The greatest example of forgiveness is for a spouse to forgive another that has betrayed them sexually. The definition of forgiveness is the restoration of trust, when the wronged person is willing to put themselves in the same position as before to be hurt. I am thankful that Tiger Woods is Man enough to admit his faults and learn and grow from them. He knows know the price of being a major hero and Role Model. He will never be the same again.
