Did you ever sing that song at Sunday School, “His banner over me is love”? I used to love singing that song. I remember the hand motions we would do as we sang it, picturing God’s love as a banner flying above my head. What does that look like? I discovered where that song came from, Song of Solomon 2:4 NIV. It may have been talking about the love between a husband and wife, but could certainly be applied to God’s love for us as well. I love the image it paints.

Psalm 60:4 also talks about God raising a banner: “But for those who fear you, you have raised a banner to be unfurled against the bow.” Flags and banners were raised during battles to rally the troops and raise morale. This verse is saying that God would give them the confidence needed to overcome any enemy. He was with them and cheered them on. They didn’t need to fear.

Do you sometimes feel that you could use a banner from God? It would be so good to see Him there holding a sign that says, “Keep it up! Stay strong! You’re on the right track. I’ve got your back!” I know I do. Although I may not see the banner, however, I know it’s there. It . . . is . . . love. If you look really, really close, you might see it when a friend shares sweet words of encouragement . . . when you listen to His Word and your heart soaks it up . . . when the Spirit washes over you with that peace that transcends understanding.

Look close, look up, His banner of love is flying above you right now.
