An anonymous person wrote: “I knelt to pray but not for long, I had too much to do. So I knelt and said a hurried prayer, and jumped up off my knees. My Christian duty was now done; my soul could rest at ease.”
Let’s contrast that view of prayer with the actions of the persistent widow in Luke 18. They’re strikingly different. The widow didn’t just drop by now and then to pay the judge a visit. She came to the judge repeatedly (v.3). Her soul wouldn’t rest until her case was heard. Why? Because she wasn’t asking for some special favor, she was simply seeking justice.
In those days, it was common practice to bribe an attendant in order to have your court case heard by the judge. The widow was probably too poor to do that. What’s more, the judge she was appealing to neither feared God nor cared about people (v.4). So she had every reason to lose heart. Due to her persistence, however, she received justice (v.5).
Now before we start thinking that God needs to be pestered, argued with, and bribed in order to have our prayers answered, it’s important to understand that this parable is contrasting the unjust judge with the one truly just Judge. God is eager to answer the prayers of His children. In fact, He will “grant justice to them quickly!” (v.8; Matthew 7:11).
We often lose heart in prayer because we don’t understand God’s timing or purpose. But there’s a better way. One writer put it like this: “Persistent prayer is the demonstration of faith in God who, while at times may delay His answers, will always act decisively and justly with respect to His people.” Keep on praying!
More:
Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere (Ephesians 6:18).

What items have you dropped off your prayer list that should be placed back on it? How does our persistence reveal our devotion to God?

I am a witness to being persistent in prayer! It works! Keep on praying for the Haitian people persistently!

The word of God says “the fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much”(James 5:16). In the same chapter it also says “prayer of faith will save the sick”. Chapter 4 of the same book adds, “we have not because we ask not”. If the best way to talk to a friend is to pick the pone and call them, what then is the best way to talk to God? Through prayer! Debate might arise as to how much time you put aside to speak to God or where you are or in what circumstance you find yourself. I want to put this forward: Are you doing it with faith, with your whole heart, mind and soul? The almighty, all seeing God will reward you accordingly. Consistent and commited prayer is the key.
Lord, bless the people of Haiti in this difficult time. Replenish the time and strength of all those who have taken time out to help and those who have donated towards the same. Words of peace and reconciliation are also directed at every corner of the world where they are urgently needed. Amen.

I believe in persistent prayer. I am a graceful recipient of the results of persistent prayer. Praying unselfishly and according to God’s will is important. Using the A.C.T.S model is helpful. Adoration. Contrition . Thankfulness and Supplication. When i don’t know what to pray, i pray the Psalms. May God Blessings be upon you all. Pray for Haiti

This morning, despite waking up abruptly after a
nightmare,i still said only a short prayer, more out of
duty.I feel guilty after reading this,i had a healthy
prayer life..i cant be certain now what happened to
me….
Sometimes,u are made to believe that you have to
say long repetitive prayers which leave you bored
and you are almost wondering how God himself
feels about such.
Using the Lord’s prayer as a model is encouraging
has anyone more tips on how to stay persistently
prayerful,without feeling bound by duty?

Hi makks,
I think feeling duty bound because we have a love relationship with God is a healthy start. And as we cultivate our love relationship with Him by spending time in His Word and learning to walk by faith and obedience, we will most certainly progress from duty to sweet fellowship with our Heavenly Father. For we delight in talking to the person we know and love.

Oh! Thank you Poh. Your post today is like a soothing balm to my soul. I have been praying for my son who has to appear in the magistrate’s court next month. My heart has been heavy and feeling stressed about this matter. I prayed asking Jesus to speak to me, before I came to this website today to read the devotion. Yes, I have an answer. We have a heavenly father who answers prayers of the contrite heart. I will forward this devotion to my son. I Thank and Praise God for reminding me through your post, that he answers prayers.
Heb13: 6 quotes, “So we say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?”
Thank you again. God’s blessing on you.

Hi Missshay,
Don’t be dishearten.
My prayer time this morning was a struggle—my thoughts kept wandering and I had a hard time trying to stay focus. The worries and to-do-list kept creeping back into my mind as I tried to intercede for some church members.
Let’s press on to develop a prayerful spirit together. 🙂

I heard an interesting quote yesterday from a movie: “Prayer is something to do in our time. Answers are given in God’s time.”
This quote was timely for me yesterday because I was overwhelmed with worry and after I heard this line in the movie, I began to laugh and was comforted.
At times, it is easy to forget that God has a plan for me and will reveal his purpose when He feels it is right. I felt silly for my worry and instantly said a prayer of thanks for this reminder.

A very good comment! I like that quote. Your last line also caught my eye: “I felt silly for my worry and instantly said a prayer of thanks for this reminder.”
Instantly. It shows that your prayer life is an attitude. I can talk to my wife most any time because we’re in the same house (or I can call her on the phone). Thankfully, God is much closer than a phone call and a prayer life grows over time so that we can pray without ceasing. (Deu 30:14, Psa 139:23, Pro 24:12, 1Th 5:17), and our prayer life comes from us understanding that He has put His Word in our heart, and that knowledge gives us the great comfort that He hears us.
But to remember that “answers are given in God’s time” … that’s precious and yields patience.
Thank you, God, not for the reality of prayer, but the realization of You. It is when I remember this that I talk to You, and I know You and I know You hear me as I allow Your Word to abide richly in me…

The Bible tells us to pray without ceasing….I Thessalonians 5:17. So to me, because Christ is in my heart, I can have a conversation with him anywhere. Though there are times, I especially bow, and pray, to give him honor, stopping to spend time with him that refreshes me, even more so.
But, I want to add something that I have learned, in my life, in my ministry, and that is praying the word of God. Jeremiah 1:9, and Jeremiah 1:12 confirms that, we should pray his word. God honors his word, when we pray.
Blessings,
Elena

Pray without ceasing”. this has been a struggle of mine for a long time because of various reasons mostly because of my selfishness and feeling like I did not have the time. So I prayed to GOD to help me in this area of my life to bring about consistency in my prayer life. HE DID! It is my daily walk with him when I get up first thing in the morning and fall on my knees. It is me driving to work taking the long route so I can just talk to him or whether it is me listening to him as His Holy Spirits comforts me during the day. It is answered prayer and unanswered in silence yet my soul is still being fed. Be blessed on today.
