There’s a fictional story that makes the rounds every once in a while: An elderly woman is looking for her car in a parking lot. When she finally locates it, she is shocked to discover three men sitting inside. She reaches into her purse and pulls out a gun, causing the frightened men to flee. The woman feels quite proud of herself as she gets in the car. Attempting to put her key in the ignition, she finds it doesn’t fit. Checking her license plate, she realizes the car isn’t hers. She had unjustly driven away the men from a car that was rightly theirs!
Leviticus 25 describes a very important time in the life of Israel called the Year of Jubilee. Celebrated every 50 years, this year focused on justice. During the Jubilee, people who had sold their property because of poverty were given back their land, even if they couldn’t afford to buy it back (Leviticus 25:24).
It might seem unfair to us that people would have to give back property that they’d purchased honestly. But God explains why this was the case in Leviticus 25:23: “The land must never be sold on a permanent basis, for the land belongs to me. You are only foreigners and tenant farmers working for me.”
Imitating God’s heart of justice and generosity can be difficult, for it requires us to sacrifice for the good of others. This is never easy to do, especially since we sometimes find ourselves in cultures saturated in greed and materialism. Two things that help are to remember that nothing actually belongs to us in the first place—it belongs to God—and He provides what we need to imitate His ways. And so, what we thought was ours is actually something He’s given us to steward to His glory.

When you remember that all things come from God, does that make it easier for you to share with others? What’s something you feel called to share with another today?

Thank you Lord for teaching me that sharing is caring that I should give freely as it has been given to me. Continue to teach me your ways heavenly Father

When I think of God the first thing that comes to mind is His tremendous love. His call to love Him, His call to love others, the “Royal Love”. Today I feel called to love others, particularly those who seemingly withhold that love for whatever reason, anger, resentment, perceived or actual wrongs; and to ask God in His wisdom to bestow on them this unending gift. To trust that He has stewardship of loving and caring for these in turbulent waters. I feel called to turn to God for His inspiration to follow the example of giving “unmerited” love. Love to those who deep down know that because He is Lord the giving and receiving of love is the divine release to live in Him joyfully in close communion with Him and each other. Love as it is written in Ephesians 5:13 – “It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.” And in Ephesians 5:7 – “It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.” What a great gift to be the earthly stewards, for whatever time we are given, of His greatest gift.
The love of God be with you all.

The love quotes should have been 1 Corinthians 13:5 – “It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.” And 1 Corinthians 13:7 – “It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.” I hope you’ll keep no record of my “wrong”. LOL! Peace

Peter, it’s so good to humbly recognize that all of our provisions flow from God and have been given to us by Him—we’re to steward them for His honor. Praying for God’s justice and generosity to be better reflected in my life!

Thanks for that story Peter I never heard it before. I do always try to remember that nothing in this world truly belongs to me. Not this body, or even the house I live in. If someone asks me, are you a homeowner? I say no, when I turn 79 then I am supposed to be. I have no idea if that day will come. One day can change from the next without any warnings. I do say, as for me and my house we will serve The Lord though. And I do claim my car as my own. But I also know that can be taken away from me also. If that is Gods will. The same goes for this body. Even the next breath I will take doesn’t belong to me. someone else will reuse that. Maybe we even used a breath that Jesus once used also.?
