My name is Gary Schelvan, 63 yr old retired American now living in Tianjin, China with my Chinese wife. I attend an evangelical international church called Tianjin International Fellowship. They have ties to the children’s orphanage here and I am in the process of volunteering to work with older kids, 14 to 18 yrs, who have been moved out of the orphanage. If I could do a specific type of ministry, it would be to work with such disadvantaged children such as this. My heart is really moved by a child that is being brought up in this world/life without the benefit of a loving, caring parent. I was extremely blessed to have two of the finest parents God ever put on this earth, I’d like to give back since my two sons are grown and on their own. Every child should feel that there is someone who cares about hem, loves them as they are. So that would be my desire for the rest of my time here on this earth. Thanks Gary S
Gary, thanks so much for sharing. It’s great to read of your passion for serving disadvantaged children. At the age when some people are considering retirement, it appears you’re gearing up for a new season of ministry. Thanks so much for your example!
Hello Tom,
Thanks for your positive comment. I have felt for some time that the Lord has been calling me to do this, and in light of all that is going on right now in this world, the darkness, I feel so compelled to just help to bring light into the world. I truly believe to just practice random acts of kindness, can so easily brighten up someone’s day, lighten their load so to speak. I live in China, language is a problem of course, but people do understand a smile, good morning, a simple ni hao hello. It is amazing to me how such a simple act as holding a door open for someone, can have such a positive impact. So as James says in his book, faith without action is dead. Tom you have a blessed weekend, all the best to you.
