What have you found is the best way to maintain peace (Ephesians 4:3) with believers in Jesus who hold opposing political views?

Everybody is entitled to his own political view(s). I just try to avoid any further argument that will make the environment more heated.
I would try to encourage us to see our differences as that, where his is adamant to discuss something else. I may just leave the place for peace to reign.
The basic thing is understanding that we have right to our opinions.

Sometimes the best thing to do , when someone says something you have a different view on, is to just say nothing, at least for a time – I think a speaker then ( at least a self-aware one) will do a replay in their head of what they just said. Its ok to just say “Well I guess I think differently on that” , we don’t have to express or comment on every opinion.

hchead and binga22, I like your emphasis on choosing to avoid strife out of respect and love for the other person. As Paul wrote, “Do everything without complaining and arguing” (Philippians 2:14).

I try to bring the conversation back to our commonalities – most agree that Christians have a duty to love and serve one another, especially children and those who cannot care for themselves, and care for creation. What we disagree on is the method in which we go about accomplishing these tasks. Individually we need to be self-examining and self-controlled enough to be open to listen to other’s opinions and respond not out of haste or anger, but in a manner that reflects love and our commitment to Jesus. Regardless of political beliefs, we are foremost His servants, let’s not have our brother trip over us.

Good thoughts, sbarclay! Focusing on our common life in Jesus and our duty to love one another will truly help cool a heated discussion.
