Some years ago, my brother died in very tragic circumstances and it was an extremely difficult time for all the family as we faced life without him.
I was with him when he died and a bit later, the words of the song, “Do not be afraid,” came to me. All I can say is that as I grieved for my brother and did my best to help and support my parents, husband, family and friends, I was either singing the chorus or had it going through my head for about a year. It gave me great comfort and the strength and ability to cope with all that I was facing because I knew with certainty I was not on my own.
Thus, the words of Isaiah 43 verses 1 to 3 are very special to me. “… Do not be afraid, for I have ransomed you. I have called you by name: you are mine. When you go through deep waters, I will be with you. When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown. When you walk through the fire of oppression, you will not be burned up; the flames will not consume you. For I am the Lord, your God, the Holy one of Israel, your Saviour.” (NLT)
In my experience, it is when life is more challenging and there is a fear of what the outcome could be that it is really reinforced that I am not on my own and have to trust and depend on God for the strength and hope I need.
