I work in ministry so taking a Sabbath is not always easy. Most of the time my wife forces me to rest.
Other times I focus on hobbies that I have picked up along the way. I write, I worship, I walk and I wonder. One of the more resent hobbies I’ve picked up is turning old beat up finds from garage sales or thrift stores and work on bringing them back to life.
Most importantly though I strive to take time to have fun with my growing family.
Seeking777, I love all the ideas you gave for taking sabbath times of rest and refreshment. Yes, a spouse can definitely help us slow down! 🙂 But the one thing you stated that stood out to me was “I wonder.” It’s so good for us to be in awe of God, His creation, His ways, His love, His grace—taking moments here and there to reflect on all these things. Yes, may we be full of awe and wonder as we walk with Jesus today!
I would agree with Tom Felten and Seeking777 Always,
It is such a splendid way to spend one’s time on the sabbath day, wondering! I am in wonder all of the time of God’s beautiful creation, the marvel and beauty of it all. By that wonder, I feel compelled to spend more time in seeking God, to know Him a little better each time I read/study His word. And then to pray/talk to Him, what a blessed privilege. On Sunday worship day, I like to arrive early at our international church service in Tianjin, China, and grab a cup of coffee and just sit in a chair alone and listen to the beautiful worship team warm up/practice, so peaceful, feeling closer to God. After service a friend of mine, Ben from Atlanta, Georgia, and I like to go to a local small restaurant to eat and talk about life as expats in China, our relationships to Jesus, goals in life, etc. with no time table or rushing schedule to keep. I then like to come home and listen to my wife practice her piano, and read devotionals, Christian articles, catch up with family/friends in the USA via email. A Sunday spent with as much time devoted to Jesus as possible, is a restful, refreshing day well spent. Back to wondering. I often wonder why God has blessed me so abundantly, when I feel like Paul when he said about himself. “I’m the chief sinner.” That makes me want to share more of His awesome love with more of the people in my life.
