A theme throughout Scripture is that obedience to God reveals our love for Him. May we start with His first and second greatest commandments today (Matthew 22:37-40) and continue from there!
Be very careful to love the Lord your God…The word “very” keeps bouncing on my head.
I think the premise there is to not just love the Lord “sincerely”, because I’m afraid we may love the Lord “sincerely’, yes, but in a manner that is “sincerely” wrong. This is an action item for me as a Christian, I shouldn’t be passive and just accept everything that is presented to me by my brothers and sisters in Christ. I should also read the WORD ON PURPOSE, BY MYSELF. Yearn for God’s wisdom to reveal to me everything he wants to me. And include in my prayer this: “Lord, teach me how to love you, to bring only to you alone”.
Quoting the first murder. Both Cain and Abel loved the Lord. Both have offered what they can offer. But the Lord looked with favor at Abel’s offering but not with Cain’s.
Gen 4:6 Then the LORD said to Cain, “Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? 7 If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.”
“If you do what is right.”. Cain was not careful to heed God’s command, to do what was right IN GOD’s EYES. He went on with his OWN ways. He may loved the Lord, but it was communicated wrongly. Maybe that’s the essence of the question posted.
Lord, grant us wisdom on how we could love you carefully, and teach us how to show our love to you, not via our own convenient and preferred ways, but Yours alone.
