World Cup elicited great passion and emotion from fans around the world. How can we use the draw of sports to point others to Jesus?

It may be as simple as using the World Cup as a conversation starter. Most cultures and countries are passionate about futbol, so it’s not a bad way to say to a stranger, “Are you following the Cup?” That can open the door to friendship, and they’ll be able to learn about you and the centrality of Jesus to your life.

I believe it was Karl Marx that said that religion was “:the opiate of the masses”. Well I believe in this day and age sports is the opiate of the masses. I spent my youth around a father that sat transfixed in front of the television watching whatever athletic competition that happened to be on. Don’t get me wrong athletics in its pure form are great, but our society has turned them into something less than what they should be. Scandals abound in professional sports, with money, sex and drugs. Fighting and rioting abound, causing some people to actually die in the process of being spectators at an event that should show athletic prowess, teamwork, and good sportsmanship. Maybe “tgustafs” is right, you could use the World Cup as a conversation starter, but I feel that the venue is fraught with evil and there are many better approaches, something as simple as “what a lovely day the Lord has made.” Maybe my approach is too simplistic, but I just do not see sports as an inroad to starting a dialogue about our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
