I feel that the only way you can truly communicate with God is when it is totally quiet and you are alone. Outside stimuli like the television, radio, or another individual speaking in the background are all distractions from truly speaking with the Lord. I take about an hour a day to just be quiet and “visit”with God. I’m not constantly praying, which is the more formal way of communication, but I take some time just to be in God’s presence without the outside world interfering. I find that I do not only need a traditional relationship with God, but also need time to feel a truly personal experience too. I enjoy the comfort of knowing that God is my Father in every way. I find it’s the only way to have a truly personal relationship with Him.
I practice daily solitude first thing in the morning before my day begins, before all the noise starts. That is my nourishment to just begin this journey of life because I never know what will happen and I want to be ready.
After washing and dressing in the morning I sit down with coffee and O.D.J., praying for my family & friends as a result of what I have read and what the Lord has shown me. Without this start I feel empty, something is missing. Often my wife joins me for this time of quiet.
I find other set times of quiet difficult, and the Lord often speaks to me as I go about daily tasks.
As the hymn “Dear Lord and Father of mankind” puts it, “speak through the earthquake, wind and fire, O still small voice of calm.”
While trying to listen I take great confidence that God is so great that if He wants to speak He will get through to me in spite of myself!
Being able to spend time in solitude is important for me.
When I was young, I would rush through my devotion. It did not help me to know what God was trying to tell me, it was more like going through the ritual that I need to do my devotion. It did help me a little but not enough for me to experience God. I was not able to establish a deeper understanding of God and to have the wisdom and discernment to live my life.
There is no set time but when things quieten down is when I ldo my devotion. Preferably in the morning, so I can be refreshed to start the day on the right foot. I can just worship God with songs of praise and prayer, then I would read His Word and be guided by the Holy Spirit to know more of Him and what my Heavenly Father wants me to know. It is not easy as busyness always takes over, but I just keep reminding myself. Being quiet and in solitude help me to know what delights God and help me to reflect things I have done, said and thought about and allow God to correct, change and direct me to His plan for me. It deepens my understanding of God and to do things that delights Him. Belonging to a supportive church is also very important to help us to understand His Word. I continue to pray for all and myself to take the time to be quiet and in solitude. Amen.
