Matt. 26:47-50 And while he yet spake, lo, Judas, one of the twelve, came, and with him a great multitude with swords and staves, from the chief priests and elders of the people. Now he that betrayed him gave them a sign, saying, “Whomsoever I shall kiss, that same is he: hold him fast.” And forthwith he came to Jesus, and said, “Hail, master”; and kissed him. And Jesus said unto him, “Friend, wherefore art thou come?”
I’ve been contemplating the last words of Christ to Judas and how they apply to my love for Him. True, I’m taking these words out of context, since Jesus spoke these words as he was betrayed by Judas. I’m not betraying Jesus, yet pondering within my heart, “why have I come to Christ”, has caused me to reevaluate my motives for accepting Him. Is it out of gratitude that I cling to Christ? Gratitude is a byproduct of love. Yes, I love Jesus because He first loved me. I am grateful He loved me enough to die for my sins, everyone’s sins. Looking into the eyes of my Savior as perhaps He asks me this same question, well… as Charlotte Elliot so eloquently wrote,
“Just as I am without one plea,
But that Thy blood was shed for me;
And that Thou bidd’st me come to Thee
O Lamb of God…I come…I come.”
