In the classic 1991 animated movie Beauty and the Beast, Gaston is the town’s strapping, egotistical hero. He’s a “manly man” admired by the locals and desired by many of the town’s younger women. Most seem to be huge fans of Gaston and overlook his obnoxious ways, except for the young and beautiful Belle.

As my family was leaving the park after a fun day at Disney, the loudspeakers were playing a happy song with the chorus, “In everything you do, celebrate you!” The song reminded me of the earlier parade that encouraged us to celebrate our dreams, “whatever they are.” My 12-year-old son, the apparent cynic in the family, proclaimed that his dream was to take over the world. Should that be celebrated? My dream was for free refills, but that was dashed too.

Popular culture reveres pride. Celebrities bathe in their narcissism, only to gain even more fans. Kids on the playground imitate the self-promoting celebrations of their favorite athletes. Arrogance masquerades as “confidence,” while meekness becomes a dirty word.

But if personal pride is such a good thing, why is it that no one likes to live close to a proud person?…
