Philippians 2:5-8: “Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, But made Himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to death—even death on a cross!”
I believe chess is a very good example of how God sees the world. You see, unlike checkers, it’s not about who has the most pieces on the board that determines who wins, but who takes out their opponent’s king first.
It may seem unlikely, but even a pawn can take out a king. Over 2000 years ago, Jesus Christ came to Earth as a pawn. He wasn’t an impressive knight, a crafty bishop or a powerful queen—at least, by man’s standards. But he won the Great Chess Game, the way only He, our great pawn could. God the Father is THE GREAT GRAND MASTER chess player.
Who is my opponent?
Am I trying to win the game of life on my own? If I am, why?
Lord Jesus, thank you for coming to earth and becoming a pawn like me. I can’t win this game on my own, but you already won it. Now I just have to wait for the Father to say “Checkmate!” Then I will be able to spend eternity with you. —submitted by Jon Sumner, US
