Psalm 139:1-10

The world-famous Eiffel Tower was erected in Paris for the 1889 World Fair, which coincided withthe centenary of the French Revolution. The impressive puddle iron structure stands 324m tall and has a total of 1,710 steps to the third platform on the highest level.More than 250 million people have visited the tower since its completion, making it the most visited paid monument in the world.

My daughter Melissa recently had the privilege to visit the Eiffel Tower. As she took to the set of347 steps leading to the first-level platform, she became agitated and tearful. Melissa suffers from acrophobia, the fear of heights. Although the staircase is safely enveloped within the iron lattice leg of the tower, the very structure offers a view of ground level falling away, causing irrational fear to a sufferer of acrophobia.

An interesting parallel can be drawn between negotiating a flight of stairs, and our walk with God. Both require progress to reach greater heights. God allows a challenge or tribulation in our lives so that we can learn. Then, once wesucceed in getting through our trial, we can step up to the next level.

Many people appear to suffer from spiritual acrophobia. When their faith is put to the test, they fail to see the encircling arms of Jesus Christ—His protection all around (Psalm 139:5). God doesn’t prevent every problem, nor does He hide it from us, as the lattice tower leg fails to hide the height of the Eiffel Tower steps. He does however promise never to leave or forsake us (Joshua 1:5).

Fear could have stolen the breathtaking view from the top of the Eiffel Tower from Melissa, but for the nudging of her partner. When you find yourself in a fearful situation, be reminded of God’s promise in Isaiah 43:5: “Do not be afraid, for I am with you.”  —submitted by Amanda Claassens, South Africa
