It is not hard to see why Hasu is passionate about bread. He stepped onto the shores of East Africa for the first time in 1984 penniless but with a huge determination to break free from the indignity of the poverty he had left behind in Asia. A quarter of a century later, Hasu is a multi-millionaire, raking in an average of four thousand dollars every day in the last year alone.

What mesmerizes me is the zeal with which he goes about his baking business. He talks about bread 24/7: its length, its height, its weight, its color, its texture, its internal structure, its nutritional value, its taste, its convenience, its history, its place in the economy, its future . . . you name it. I have seen him talk about bread five hours non-stop without the slightest hint of exhaustion in his voice or his mind!

Whereas Hasu’s passion is bread, mine is the Bread of Life—Jesus Christ. But I’m not sure my friends would vouch for that. For while Christ without doubt gives me “joy inexpressible” (1 Peter.1:8), “the kingdom of God is like treasure hidden in a field” (Matt.13:44), meaning I must unequivocally “put on the Lord Jesus Christ” (Rom.13:14) to reveal Him and claim the prize (Philippians 3:14).

And so my resolution for 2011 is to own “the mind of Christ” (1 Corinthians 2:16). If in my pursuit I manage to win over just one soul, there will be no more reason to fret over the twelve dollars Hasu pays me daily for my toil at the bakery. After all, won’t my eternal riches be greater than that of a multi-millionaire?  —Submitted by Willie, Kenya
