According to columnist Perry Buffington, a licensed psychologist, failure takes on a life of its own because the brain remembers incomplete tasks or failures longer than successes or completed activities. It’s called the “Zeigarnik effect.” Buffington states, “When a project or a thought is completed, the brain . . . no longer gives the project priority or active working status. . . . But failures have no closure. The brain continues to spin the memory, trying to come up with ways to fix the mess and move it from active to inactive status.”
Peter failed in many ways, but Jesus fixed the mounting mess of the apostle’s failures and moved his blunders from active to inactive status. Peter failed in at least two ways that people most fear: being powerless in a crisis and awkward in a social setting. In the most important times of his life with Jesus—the Caesarea Philippi scene (Matthew 16:20-23), the transfiguration scene (Matthew 17:1-4), and the foot-washing scene (John 13:4-10)—Peter said the most inappropriate things. He failed because the deluge of his pride overpowered him, and he attempted to blanket himself in his own strength. At the arrest of Jesus, he collapsed and became a pathetic coward (Matthew 26:69-75). His heart deceived him and he denied his Teacher and Lord. But Jesus gave him a second chance and moved his failure from active to inactive (Mark 16:7; John 21:15-17).
Jesus can move our failure to inactive status when we realize that He’s bigger than our failures and He’s willing to give us another chance. If our failures are the result of sin, then we should confess our sins to God and genuinely repent (1 John 1:9). When we fail, we can and should get up again (Proverbs 24:16). And we should press on in Jesus’ power (Acts 3:1-26).

In what ways have you failed? What truth do you need to accept as you ask Jesus to move your failure from active to inactive status?

Thanks, what a wonderful teaching. I’ve allowed failures (and sin) to dominate my thoughts. Shame and regret define me more than the joy of my victories and who I am in Christ. I’m ready to receive all that Jesus came to give. The old is gone, the new has come.

I thank my Lord and Savior Jesus for giving me not just a second chance, but another chance, and another chance. But one thing we have to be aware of is just because He gives us these additional chances, it is not a free pass to continue in the sin of making wrong choices and wrong thinking. Satan is the author of shame, fear, and regret. Don’t let him win. Love God, be stable and trust Him.

GrowinginChrist, I could not agree more. Shall we keep on sinning that grace may abound? By no means! For those who believe this way, prove they do not have a good grasp of the grace of God. His grace should motivate us toward holy living. Thanks for your insight. Great addition to this conversation.

This is a great teaching. I will no longer let the devil tell deceive me. I have sinned, but God has forgiven me for all my sins. I am the example to my children so will not let any of my past failures engulf my life because God has delivered me..

Praise God for your commitment to living forgiven and not letting the enemy manipulate and deceive you. I will stand with you as you live a grace-filled life.

Praise God that his word met you where you were today. God has a way of giving us just what we need. I penned these words a while ago, and they spoke to me as well. Blessings!

Thank you for the wonderful message on failures! I especially liked the part where you described our attempts at correcting our failings. When you stated:
“The brain continues to spin the memory, trying to come up with ways to fix the mess and move it from active to inactive status”
you were describing my life in direct details! I have always attempted to correct my failings and “work them out” using my own talents and abilities and I would get so forlorn when the results were less than what I desired. I would also feel that way when what I expected of others was not delivered to me. I was setting myself up for failure and disappointment by placing my expectations on others!
Thank you for posting such a powerful topic!

AManofGod, I appreciate your words of encouragement. We all find ourselves trying to fix our own messes and live according to unrealistic expectation. We have but one audience – God, and he has already declared us righteous in his Son. So, go a live a shame-free and grace-filled existence in Jesus.

I, as a teenager, growing up in a very ungodly world struggles so much everyday. and yes, i have alot of failures in my life but i look up to God, and ask him to help me. I have been asking God to help me get out of this hole i have dug myself into. I asked him to show me that hes here helping me. This passage truly helped me.

Father, I ask your blessings on cassigalle 10. Give her your peace and strength as she seeks to live for you. When she feel despondent, give her your joy. When she feels shame and guilt, remind her that she is forgiven and loved by you. When she feels alone, bring her great comfort. In the name of Jesus I pray. Amen.
