Last night I attended a lecture, and the speaker mentioned that his dissertation advisor, one of the leading theologians of our day, told him that if he had to do it all over again, he would not have neglected the Scriptures. That is a shocking admission. How can you do theology without immersing yourself in Scripture? Then it struck me that we all face this challenge today. There are so many things that demand our attention–such as our cellphones, the Internet, and even this blog!–that if we’re not careful, we can become so distracted by good things that we forsake what is best.
A well-read person is not someone who reads everything, but is someone who says no to alot of books and blogs so that she can read what is best. Let’s make sure that we make time for Scripture–this theologian’s regret is not one I want to have.

Mike, your brief post of today in fact said quite a lot. We do many good things but often forget the right things. We want to remain connected with strangers but do not worry about close family members. We get easily motivated by TV programmes but are bored by church sermons. We find peace in serene nature without thinking of the presence of God. We try to follow Christ but grumble about sufferings. The list is endless…
Thank you, Mike, for reminding us of the need to have the right priorities and make the right choices in life.

Yes, we do many good things but leave out the right things. We are impressed by TV evangelists but can’t bear with the church. We can find peace with nature but do not feel the presence of God. We try to follow Christ but grumble about suffering. The list is endless…
Thank you for reminding us to set our priorities right.

Yeah. This post of yours means a lot. I just realized that I also abandon the best book in this world. I thought by reading the ODB and this blog through internet can be enough.

I too have neglected the best book, thinking this was enough. Great as it is, it does make me hunger for more of God and things of Him. I need more of the word His Word. Thanks for reminding us.

It is overwhelming to even try making time for everything that demands attention from us to appoint where we choose to neglect that which is eternal. I just pray that we all begin to set our priorities straight and by God’s grace do what must be done.
