I am having a hard time since I have experienced the pain of an illicit relationship in my own life on fb. I understand these tools can be used for good and evil. I guess my hurt is preventing me from seeing any good come from fb or these social networking sites although I’m sure there is that “good” side to it.
My social networks give me an opportunity to pray for people I normally wouldn’t get to see or hear from. Perfect example, this weekend a childhood friend died and I wouldn’t have known about it if I hadn’t been on fb. I have now an opportunity to be the hands and feet I wouldn’t have been able to be. I can pray for the healing of others in the car that are in critical care and I also get to minister to the family at the funeral home for the friend that died. It is a grim example but profound if you think of the influence you can be if you will be.
Having regained my faith and a stronger relationship with the Lord, after 10 years turning my back, am enjoying having facebook to catch up on things, including seeing video clips which have encouraged my walk
I find it useful cos I prefer to write than to talk. I get to ‘hear’ from others about updates on their lives.. pray.. show concern.. edify..
And also receive info about other areas that others are burdened over.. so I also join in prayer.. What a joy to see ourselves being touched over the things of God even over fb..
Facebook has allowed me to encourage others, feed their souls with an scripture status, and be a witness by being transparent about how I struggle and yet how God’s love, protection and wisdom can help me overcome. I have many people come up to me and tell me how my comments have encouraged them when I don’t even realize they are reading them.
I use it to promote my Christian Counseling Business and to help others with my notes and book suggestions.
However, I can be dragged down and caught up in others negativity if I don’t watch out. I can also lose time to social networking that I need to use elsewhere. Like everything…we have to maintain a balance.
I signed up for Facebook to stay close to my son a student at SEU in Florida. He posts pictures and videos of his mission trips abroad and he shares scriptures with his friends that encourage each other and me.
It’s a blessing to be able to “see” all the great things he shares with me that God is doing in his life.
Latest news & updates posted in the wall is great but sometimes stressful. Lately I admit, i got too addicted w/ fb games. But sometimes in my life, I realize why not reading inspirational messages that would uplift and have quite time with God. I quit playing games.. Better divert to something w/c enriches my soul & helps me grow.
…this is my struggle, too!! ….way too much time spent with stupid games!!! …and I haven’t figured out a way to bring it into balance. It seems to be all or nothing for me…either I can’t play at all, or I am consumed with playing! I would like to be able to ‘play’ in moderation…but the games aren’t designed to be played in moderation….
If I spent as much time in God’s Word, and devotions…and playing my guitar…as I do on FB playing games….I would be a much better Christian/guitar player!! 🙂
I use Facebook as a tool to witness to others. If a particular song by the choir and/or Scripture has touched me, I will share that as a post. I also use it for prayer (asking prayers for myself and praying for others). It is also a great tool for encouraging others, especially the youth in my church.
While I have a good number of Christian friends, I also have non-Christian friends on Facebook. This is a wonderful way to testify to the love of Christ.
I joined Facebook for the main purpose of communicating with out of the country relatives and former officemates and friends. Usually, I send them wall scriptural messages but lately I personalize it to whoever needs a biblical enlightenment. Recently, I came to know that a daughter of a dear friend is in prostitution and this daughter doesn’t communicate with the mother anymore. I really wanted to help in the restoration of the daughter that is why I find the facebook helpful because we communicate and she is grateful to all my messages. Please help me to do something more…..

More importantly it’s another way for my kids to see who their Dad is.
Likewise, assuming your kids will “friend you” in the back of their mind is the thought that Dad is watching…
Hmmmm?
I used to ask my Sunday School kids, “would you go see that movie with Jesus?”
Same idea….

Maybe I just don’t know how to use them but I find them totally useless. I don’t know what to do with them and I am only 30.

I like the idea Ted..but it wouldn’t help us be salt and light to the word.

I have the privilege of hosting Bible2010, a Facebook group supported by my church and devoted to helping people read through the Bible this year.
Like any tool, social networking sites can be used for godly purposes or for silly ones.
I like a balance of both 🙂
