My father-in-law passed away in 2006 following a long bout with Alzheimer’s. For eight years prior to his death, my wife and I didn’t take a vacation. Hardly even a weekend away. She cooked for him every night and looked after his every need during the day. We finally hired sitters to be with him during the days and nights we couldn’t be there. It put a strain on our marriage, but we worked through it, with the Lord’s help. We never had to put him in a nursing home, but we were facing that eventuality. He died at home and at peace. So what did God teach me through that process?
He sacrificed his Son. I sacrificed only time. I’m enjoying my life now, largely because … “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” —Gal. 2:20
ron415, thanks so much for putting into words what God has led you through. Your Christ-like sacrifice honored your Dad, glorified God, and showed the world what God’s sacrificial love looks like. I so appreciate your example!
