Movie director James Cameron has been responsible for some of the most popular movies of all time: The Terminator, Titanic, Avatar, and others. But what many people don’t know is that far from being removed from the details of filmmaking, Cameron is heavily involved with almost every aspect of the process, from cinematography to creative design. Drawing from his earlier experience as a designer, Cameron even played a key role in developing some of the fantastic special effects that are the centerpiece of his most famous films.
It can be easy to imagine that God is a creative but distant movie director of sorts, interested only in the grandest aspects of the universe. In fact, American statesman Thomas Jefferson believed in such a Creator. He viewed God as a cosmic clockmaker who designed the world and put it into motion, but—apart from that—has little other involvement in human affairs.
But Jesus paints a very different picture of God in Luke 12. In verses 4 and 5, he describes a God of terrifying eternal power, a God rightly to be “feared.” And yet, in the very next verse He also says that this same God cares about creatures as insignificant as sparrows and knows us intimately, right down to the very number of “hairs on [our] head” (Luke 12:7). He goes on to say, “You are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows.” He’s the Creator of the entire universe, but also a Father who knows us and cares for us individually.
What a profound and beautiful truth this is—that the God of the universe cares for me, and knows everything about me . . . even my deepest thoughts (Psalm 139:1-2). It brings great encouragement to know that we’re loved by such an amazing and caring God!

Hi Peter: The start of each new day I am impressed by a God who loves me. I often wake up with a song or tune on my heart. He gives me that song, he encourages my heart and He gathers up troubling thoughts of prayers through the night and bears the weight, so I feel freedom of the soul. I read His word and see Him, I pry closer into it’s depths and His Spirit meets me there. I leave to engage in my work and He watches over me, and I see the sparrow and smile. Sparrows make me smile, I have a picture of a sparrow next to my desk artfully drawn by an artist, I love. To know how common, how many, yet cared for By God, it makes me smile and appreciate Him. This great God who cares for me, along with a flock of others, yet loves completely even though He knows my thoughts and intents. I will always be loved and never be lost or forgotten. Yes, that’s worth more than many sparrows, God is able. Thanks Peter

Peter, one of the greatest reminders to me that God cares about the details of my life is found in the passage you referenced in Romans 8 in the “More” section. It’s verse 32—“He who spared not His own Son but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him freely give us all things?” Time and time again, that verse has grounded me in believing that I have a Father who knows, sees, and cares about me. When all else fails, and I begin to question whether God cares for me, I need only look to the cross to see that God indeed has come near and is involved in ALL the details of my life. Since He has demonstrated this grandest of all gestures toward me, how can I think that He would not be involved in continuing to care for me in the most intimate ways? So this morning, as I already hear the birds in song, I join them with my own. “I sing because I’m happy. I sing because I’m free. His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.” Praying that we would all by grace draw near to the God who has drawn near to us! Thanks, Peter.
