As we travel country roads observing fields and farms, my husband and I marvel at the beauty we see and also the potential dangers involved in driving down these lanes. On either side of the roads are deep ditches. I imagine their purpose is to drain the fields of water and keep the roadways from being flooded or washed away. If drivers should slide off the icy pavement into a ditch or for a split-second take their eyes off the road, however, it could prove to be fatal.
There can be ditches in life that aren’t as obvious but can prove to be even more deadly. Fortunately, we don’t need to fear these potential pits, for Scripture reveals that by following God in obedience we can avoid them (Joshua 1:7).
We’re to be “as shrewd as snakes and harmless as doves” (Matthew 10:16). Wisdom demands we acknowledge that allowing ourselves to be distracted from Jesus’ way could leave us and others in spiritual, emotional, physical, or financial danger. Our distractions aren’t ours alone.
There are distractions or temptations common to all of us (1 Corinthians 10:13). In His explanation of the parable of the farmer scattering seed, Jesus names two of them, “worries of this life and the lure of wealth” (Matthew 13:22). The apostle John picks up on Jesus’ teaching and names these distractions as “a craving for physical pleasure, a craving for everything we see, and pride in our achievements and possessions” (1 John 2:16).
We’re tempted throughout our Christian lives, not just at the outset. But by God’s power, we can resist the temptations of this world and please the One who promises “a rich and satisfying life” that lasts forever (John 10:10; 1 John 2:17).

Reflect on your life right now. What distractions are you facing? How can you lean into God and His wisdom and power in order to overcome them?

Hi Marlena: I was distracted last night by the big game, but yes, at least for me distractions are everywhere. The worse ones are the ones that we can’t say they are evil or bad, maybe there even good; however, they pull us away. Now I’m not complaining too much here, but there is this state called ADD, never knew we lived through all of the horrible symptoms and results. As I’m older I find out why I did so poorly in school, ADD, Dyslexia, all stuff a lot of guys had/have. Distractions are the name of the game. The Lord; however, did not push me to the side, but I have enjoyed a continually fuller life with Him. God gave me grace to continue, God gave me a place and provisions for a family. Those things have caused me to hold tight to God and His word. So, I saw many ditches, I saw I lacked the power to stay out of them, I knew I needed help, and God took my weakness and gave me His strength. Now, I just need to pay attention. Thanks Marlena

Lol…yep, back in the day we thought those kids were just BAD. Now we know there’s a name for it. 🙂

Marlena, as I read the verses in 1 John, my thoughts went back to Adam and Eve in the garden, to Jesus’ temptation in the wilderness, and then to my own areas of vunerability and temptation. It’s quite interesting that the tempter has not changed his method of operation after all this time. No need to be creative if what he’s always done keeps working for him, I guess. He knows our human weaknesses spot on. His tactics are to appeal to us through the lust of the flesh (physical pleasure), the lust of the eyes (everything we see), and the pride of life (achievements and possessions). Every sin is believing one of these lies—that these things will satisfy us and give us life and significance. As believers, though we may recognize these temptations, we won’t avoid the ditches unless we keep our focus straight ahead on Christ, submitting to His authority and obeying His word. It’s not easy, as we are unindated with distractions on every hand. Sometimes life feels like a Whack-A-Mole game. Whack one distraction down, then up pops another. 🙂 Marlena, I also like what you said about our distractions not being ours alone. Great point. I don’t think we realize how we put other people in our lives at risk when we get off course. The awareness of that makes me realize the weightiness of my choices. I don’t want to fall in the ditch, and I certainly don’t want to take anyone else with me. Praise God for Jesus who redeems our life from the pit of destruction! (Psalm 103: 4) Praying that we all keep straight ahead today. Thanks for this encouragement, Marlena. God bless you.

Oh, yes! Satan is probably the biggest proponent and advocate of a very good philosophy, that we would actually do well to heed; i.e., “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”. On the other hand, we need to get off that river called “da Nile” and recognize we are broken people and be honest with ourselves about the who/how/why source of our brokenness, so that we can take those broken pieces to the lover of our souls who has already put us right. We just need to receive the repairs that are already there waiting for us.
gagirllive on February 6, 2017 at 5:48 pm
You got that right, friend! Isn’t it interesting that when Satan does the same things expecting the same results, he’s clever? But when we do the same things expecting different results, we’re insane! How we need a “Chain-breaker”! (Right, Gary? 🙂 )

Interesting, indeed! And, I’m glad you brought up that “Chain-breaker” song. After reading your & Gary’s comments about it, I had every intention of YouTubing it, but got distracted (Superbowl LI & all that). Thanks for the reminder. Gonna go listen right now!

Lot of different artists recorded; who do you like? Zach Williams, Charlie Hall, Detrick Haddon?
gagirllive on February 6, 2017 at 8:24 pm
I only know Zach Williams’ version.
hsnpoor on February 7, 2017 at 12:37 pm
I listened to all and that was the one I liked best too! The one by Detrick Haddon was a totally different song, just same title. For anyone else who might be interested, here’s a preview of what awaits in this song (words are awesome):
If you’ve got pain
He’s a pain taker
If you feel lost
He’s a way maker
If you need freedom or saving
He’s a prison-shaking Savior
If you’ve got chains
He’s a chain breaker
Good Word!

Distractions: I use to say MY home, MY Business and this took away from God and his gifts. Now I have changed (working on it) my thoughts as to God’s Business, God’s house he gave me. With that humble approach it becomes … How can I manage this business as if it was a gift from God? … Food for thought.

Good food it is!

Thank you for sharing this Eric, I would definitely benefit from applying this in my life as well: the friends and relatives God gave me, the workplace and colleagues God provided for me, the material possessions (no matter what they may be) God gave me, and so on. This way I should use them to honour Him and also do my best to be a good steward for all that He provides for me, seeking help and wisdom from the Spirit to do so appropriately. Very practical way to avoid the ditches 🙂

My distractions? I can say that I am stress lately. Even to my workplace and ministry that God gave me I become ineffective. Still, I have to trust the process. And pray to God that He will guard my heart no matter what circumstances I may be in.
