In 2015, a country in the Middle East elected its first women to public office. In fact, in the first electoral cycle in which women appeared on the ballot, 17 were elected! I listened to an interview of a woman who had won a seat on her local council, and she exuded ecstatic joy. She acknowledged how difficult life can be for women in her country, but this didn’t diminish her celebration. Many more reforms are needed, but all people should revel in this historic transition. After years of exclusion from the political process, women have now seen the door open a bit with the possibility of something better ahead.
It can be easy on occasions like this to be cynical about all the changes yet to be achieved and all the wrongs yet to be made right. I know I often struggle to embrace hope or joy in a world where justice seems so far away. It’s good for us to hear the psalmist’s instructions: “Come, everyone! Clap your hands! Shout to God with joyful praise!” (Psalm 47:1). These words are more than mere suggestion—they’re a command.
We embrace joy not because we’ve turned a blind eye to the manifestations of injustice or because we cover our ears and whistle past the ruin threatening to overwhelm us. Rather, we embrace joy because God “is the great King of all the earth” (Psalm 47:2). Evil and chaos don’t rule; God does. Death and sorrow don’t write the final lines to the story; God does.
Because the “Lord Most High is awesome” (Psalm 47:2), our entire life is a celebration of joy. We wait, with hope and prayers, for the day when God will make all things new. And until that hope is fulfilled, we watch for God to act. And as an act of faith and trust, we insist on joy.

Read Isaiah 9:3. Ponder the imagery he uses to describe the people’s joy. What does this imagery express to you?

What robs you of joy? What can cause you to be cynical and spurn it? What would it look like for you to insist on joy this week?

What an encouraging story about women using their gifts in political office and for the good of the country. Also, I think you clinched it here:
We embrace joy not because we’ve turned a blind eye to the manifestations of injustice or because we cover our ears and whistle past the ruin threatening to overwhelm us. Rather, we embrace joy because God “is the great King of all the earth” (Psalm 47:2). Evil and chaos don’t rule; God does. Death and sorrow don’t write the final lines to the story; God does.
Amen. Thank you!

Hi Winn, a busy day for you. Well Marlena got up early enough to acknowledge your great portion about joy. Like faith joy is not blind, it is victorious, is because it trumps (no pun) evil and comes from being with God. It is so easy to allow a little news, some bad press, and possibly personal impact to let us slide into a cynical state. With world conditions and even local upheaval, punishing events from the environment, it’s real easy for me to slide cynical. It takes a concentrated effort to buckle into the seat of joy. Joy; however, is one of the greatest expressions a believer can wear. A sincere smile, an honest laugh, and a chipper chuckle all begin to slay the worrisome heart. This stuff is not out of “ignorance is bliss”, this is is out of knowledge, history, hope, and that life giving, that joy giving touch from knowing God. Praise His name, worship Him and joy comes. Thanks Winn

yes, it’s the easiest thing in the world to allow our joy to be stolen from us. we’ve got to hold tight.

Things that I do which doesn’t bring meaning to my life robs me of joy because I can do reasonable stuff during the time wasted. This week I’ll carry out my life with the joy from God because I insisted it.

i think of the little foxs that steal our joy on a daily basis. the joy i find to be most fruitful is not in more doing, but in abiding and trust or if you will abiding in His presents, isolated from the world. the verse of going to your room and closing the door comes to mind. one more though that has come to me recently is like the pc i am using. last night i used it till it had no more power and it failed. was completely spent of power. i thought of myself as the pc and and even when i could not do any more i understood i am His. a cause for great joy!

right on, sim. I hope the week is filled with much goodness

so many things going through my mind on this one. thinking politics is rebellion against God. men and women have failed, but their Redeemer lives and is very strong. yes we should perform our civic duty, but to do as we delight in the LORD. true Joy. Jesus said to render unto caesar what is caesar’s and unto God what belongs to God. surely praise and thanksgiving belong to God, stemming from joy and peace.
