For 5 years, an ancient clay seal remained in a dark closet in Jerusalem’s Institute of Archaeology. Dug up at the foot of the southern part of Jerusalem’s old city wall, initial examination failed to establish the true identity of the nearly 3,000-year-old object.
But then a researcher carefully scrutinized the letters on the seal, and it led to a major discovery. The impression bears an inscription in ancient Hebrew script reading: “לחזקיהו [בן] אחז מלך יהדה” or “Belonging to Hezekiah [son of] Ahaz king of Judah.”
The script is accompanied by a two-winged sun, with wings turned downward, flanked by two ankh symbols symbolizing life. Archaeologists believed this seal was made late in King Hezekiah’s life when the king’s personal symbols changed from the winged scarab (the symbol of power and rule that had been familiar throughout the Ancient Near East) to that of the winged sun (God’s sign that He would heal King Hezekiah from his life-threatening illness) as found in Isaiah 38:1-8.
This archaeological discovery presents fresh, corroborating light on the biblical narrative. It reminds us once again that the Bible isn’t fiction. It contains words inspired by the living God (2 Timothy 3:16-17). In Scripture we read of real events, real people, and a real God. And just as King Hezekiah approached God with his honest appeal (Isaiah 38:3), we too can approach Him boldly and present our requests to Him. And even though His answers may not be what we want or expect, we can rest assured that He’s compassionate, He hears us, and He’s powerful. He even orders the movement of the sun! (Isaiah 38:8).
May we read the Bible with a renewed excitement and anticipation to know our God and His love even more.

Hi Poh, ODB and ODJ compliment each other very nicely today. I’m sure God had in mind that His word would be a mark in history, making history, and history being proved by it. I believe that for the believer the Bible proves history not the other way around. It can never honestly be proven other wise. The writer was also correct that “the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom”. One of the greatest glories (respect) we can pay to God and our faith is to believe His word. Not part of it, not the parts we like, but all parts, God has overseen compilation of a great and living work. With all of the fiction and magic, and the like, there is nothing greater than a book that contains living information for a life in light, no tricks, no magic
spells; however there are some curses and blessings. There is no greater account, no greater God, no greater life than to trust in His word. Thanks Poh.

I really like the way you describe it Gary. The Bible proves history, not the other way around……..there is nothing greater than a book that contains living info for a life in light, no tricks, no magic. God has given us a manual for life, so that’s the only instruction we really need.

Poh Fang, it’s beautiful but not unexpected to see Scripture continue to be supported by historical evidence. The greatest evidence for the God of the Bible, however, is the changed hearts that continue to be realized as the Holy Spirit works in individuals around the globe. May we be encouraged today as we study the Scriptures and view God’s ongoing work in our midst!

Thanks, Poh! The bible isn’t fiction!! It is God’s word, bearing God’s mind, and narratives of God’s works in human history!!! Gary nailed it by saying, “for the believer the Bible proves history not the other way around”. As an anthropologist and a christian, I have had cause to scrutinise my beliefs as a christian and my beliefs as an anthropologist, in the light of the bible and various anthropological theories. One case that comes to mind is the CREATION VS EVOLUTION debate. What I have found is that the bible account of creation is correct as humans were created by God which counters and nullifies Darwin’s postulation of natural selection of small, inherited variations that increase the individual’s ability to compete, survive, and reproduce. This archaeological (archaeology is a branch of anthropology) discovery of an ancient seal belonging to Hezekiah [son of] Ahaz king of Judah, as shared by Poh Fang Chia, further gives credence to the accuracy of the histories told in the bible. I pray that believers would continue to read and apply the wonderful truths of the bible to life, and that non-believers would come to know and embrace Jesus Christ, through the wonderful truths of the bible in Jesus name. Amen

Thank you for today’s devo Poh!! This song by Amy Grant
Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.
Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.
When I feel afraid,
Think I’ve lost my way,
Still you’re there right beside me.
And nothing will I fear
As long as you are near.
Please be near me to the end.
Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.
Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.
I will not forget
Your love for me and yet
My heart forever is wandering.
Jesus be my guide,
And hold me to your side,
I will love you to the end.
Nothing will I fear as long as you are near.
Please be near me to the end.
Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.
Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path,
And a light unto my path.
You’re the light unto my path.

I don’t know what happened to the other comments I made in replies to Gary & Tom but I’m not seeing them.

I would read God’s words confidently and with victor as God controls everything for His good. The shadow that moved back ten steps was indeed an unhiddendable miracle and that was my favourite one as they are a lot of miraculous done by God too!

Thanks for sharing, Poh Fang. Your reference to Hezekiah recalls a course from my now distant undergraduate days on he history of the ancient Near East, particularly surrounding the Assyrian, Babylonian, and Medo-Persian empires and their involvement with the Israelites as found in the Old Testament and other ancient texts. Time after time the words of holy scripture display the inspired, inerrant, and infallible truths from the mouth of God for which we must be forever grateful and reverent.
