The small car shook as Frank pushed down hard on the accelerator while fixing his eyes on the headlights coming toward him. Having Christlike parents who ran a counseling organization, you would think that Frank would have had the skills to navigate his way through the trials and temptations of life. But his sinful choices, including the abuse of alcohol, had taken their toll, and he resolved to silence the shame and guilt. As he prepared to pull into the lane of an oncoming truck to end his pain, however, he was suddenly stopped by the palpable presence of God.
It’s possible to live in an environment of healing, and yet never receive healing for yourself. A man lying beside the pool of Bethesda had been sick for 38 years (John 5:1-5). Although only meters from the edge, he had no one to help him get into the pool to be healed when the water began to bubble. Though he longed to be well, someone else always reached the water before him and he remained in his afflicted state (John 5:7).
Perhaps you’ve sought healing from the wrong you’ve done against God and the shame that won’t leave you alone. Like the man by the pool, you’ve felt helpless and unable to get well spiritually and emotionally.
Jesus asked the man, “Would you like to get well?” (John 5:6). He then told him, “Stand up, pick up your mat, and walk!” (John 5:8). At Jesus’ command, “the man was healed! He rolled up his sleeping mat and began walking!” (John 5:9). Later, Jesus told him, “Now you are well; so stop sinning, or something even worse may happen to you” (John 5:14).
Don’t allow sin and shame to keep you at arm’s length from those who want to help you and from the God who longs to restore you. Find forgiveness and hope in His presence today.
NLT 365-day reading plan passage for today: John 10:1-18

Read Mark 2:2-5 and consider how some friends helped a man enter Jesus’ presence where he could be healed.

What past or current sinful choice has caused you to experience shame? How will you pursue the forgiveness and restoration that Jesus alone can provide?

Hi Ruth, Isaiah describes the shameful condition of the nation of Israel in capture 50 and the phrase is again repeated in 59. “Was my arm to short” God asks, and the passage indicates it was in their saving, He was able to restore from sin, rebellion, and idolatry. As you know God just isn’t the great Creator and Giver, He is also the great redeemer. He who has made the universe has the ability to redeem anybody from anything. One can not go to a place God’s arm can not retrieve. Jesus sealed that deal with his life, but God has always been able, the sin question has now been totally paid. I don’t want to entirely speak for you Ruth, but if we but grasp what God, the Mighty One is saying, hope must begin to pull the soul to a God who heals and forgives. He seeks to be with us “The presence of Jesus”. Thanks Ruth

HIS PRESENCE IN MY LIFE GIVE ME THE POWER TO STAND IN ANY PROBLEM I FACE . I KNOW HE LOVE ME ALL THE TIME . .GOD BLESS ALL .

Hi Gary and youssef1777, as I re-read this devotional and your comments, I was once again reminded of Psalm 139:7-12 (NLT)
I can never escape from your Spirit!
I can never get away from your presence!
If I go up to heaven, you are there;
if I go down to the grave,[a] you are there.
If I ride the wings of the morning,
if I dwell by the farthest oceans,
even there your hand will guide me,
and your strength will support me.
I could ask the darkness to hide me
and the light around me to become night—
but even in darkness I cannot hide from you.
To you the night shines as bright as day.
Darkness and light are the same to you.
The presence of Jesus in our lives makes all the difference. May we seek Him earnestly today.

Ruth, your story about Frank reminds me of what I always told my own children—God has no grandchildren; only children. My redemption from brokenness and sin is non-transferable. Each of us has to come to a personal faith in Christ. Each of us has to answer the question that Jesus asked the paralytic, “Do you want to be made well?” Isn’t it just like Jesus to ask such an insightful question? Like the paralytic, we often offer excuses as to why we continue to live in our brokenness, sin, and shame. Instead of taking personal responsibility we often say it’s someone else’s fault. But when Jesus shows up in our lives, we are confronted with the truth—we are sin-sick and only in His presence are we made whole. He is still the Healer and Redeemer—the only hope we have. May we take up our mats and walk with Him today. Thanks for this encouragement, Ruth. God bless you.

It’s called the blame game. Sometimes people can’t get past the guilt and shame of their sin, so they put the blame on things that happened to them in their past or circumstances in their life. The only way we can get past this is to rely on our only hope. Our hope is in Jesus, our life is in Jesus, and until we realize this, we have no hope. I used to do the same thing, and it took me a while to realize that until I stop making excuses for what I did and took responsibility for my actions, only then could I seek forgiveness in Jesus who wipes all my sins away. I used to live in brokenness thinking I deserved to feel that way, but Jesus wiped away all the brokenness from my life and made me whole again. Yes, He is still the Healer and Redeemer and our only hope.
Shalom GAgirl!

And that game started in the Garden of Eden with Adam & Eve & the serpent. By my way of thinking, Adam’s excuse was worse than the deceiving of Eve because Adam ultimately blamed God (because of this woman YOU gave me) for his behavior. And, isn’t that where the buck stops with us, as well, when we choose to go down that road? I’ve always thought that to be the reason that the NT says that sin and death entered into the world through Adam and not Eve. Could be a bit of residual feminist thinking, but I don’t think so….

Ruth, I’m reminded of the difference between godly sorrow and worldly sorrow as Paul describes in 2 Corinthians 7:10. As the Holy Spirit brings conviction, may we turn, confess our sin, and walk in the forgiveness and life only God provides.

Amen, Tom. Godly sorrow brings true repentance. Worldly sorrow only brings remorse.

Thank you Ruth for this timely devotion today. It’s been a struggle trying to get better after the sepsis. I almost started thinking I deserved to feel this way, but I know God is healing me more each day, and I just have to keep my eyes on my Redeemer and live for Him so I can be the person He created me to be.
Shalom

Who of us is deserving of anything? Enjoy the grace of God, my sister. 🙂

Yes, that’s true. I hear that song, “His Grace is enough for me”, every time someone calls me. I have it set up that way. 🙂

Sandy, you know God didn’t save you to punish you or leave you hanging. His salvation is to the uttermost and don’t you forget it! Keep that head to the sky and know that you know that you know that this suffering in your body will soon pass. In the meantime, HE is right there with you to comfort you. Enjoy and revel in his presence! It’s a “get well” gift…:)

Before I was saved (and a few times thereafter), I struggled with masturbation. Up felt ashamed because I knew this was not what the Lord wanted or desired, despite not knowing Him. A few weeks later, I was saved but still struggled with this issue and had the unbearable shame that followed. Instead of letting that shame take over, I prayed for deliverance in the Name of Jesus. I am happy to report that I no longer struggle with said issue.

Praise God for the victory you have found in Christ, jesusking32597! Besetting sins do not have to master us!

Isn’t His mercy amazing?!!! There are some sins in our lives he will work with us to work out of us. But sometimes, God, in His mercy & grace and for His purposes, will just flat out deliver us! I was delivered from fornication and smoking. No self-will or struggling involved. Just the grace and mercy of God’s deliverance! I will never forget and I will never be ashamed to tell it! To God and God alone be ALL of the praise, honor and glory! Our God is an AWESOME God!

I have had my own struggles with sinful habits and other not so sinful but not God-honouring habits which have led me to experience many years of guilt and and that deep feeling of sorrow which comes from keeping silent about my shame. I tried to talk about it with brothers in Christ whom I thought could be understanding, even tried a few times with pastors but I never found the relief and hope which I was hoping for. My personal struggle is not over yet, but as I have drawn nearer to Jesus and got to know Him better, I feel His presence in my life transforming me everyday and I have the strong conviction and the faith that I am on the path to healing. It has been long and, I won’t lie, there have been times when I thought freedom from my struggle will only come about by leaving this life. But I praise God for not having given up on me even through the most difficult moments and for helping me to find forgiveness and hope by His constant presence, without which I’m not sure what my life would be like today. The presence of Jesus in our lives truly makes all the difference, Ruth. Thank you for this devotional. Blessings to all.

godlove, no doubt we all have some secret sin we’re struggling with and will continue to struggle with until we die. I don’t know yours and you don’t know mine, but God does and let’s just agree to pray for one another that we might decrease that He might increase in our lives now and forevermore. Love & blessings to you!

hsnpoor, your reply made me think of one song I like very much: “More” by the Nigerian gospel singer Sinach. It’s a song from 2010, I’m not sure if you will know it but I’ll post the lyrics below (if I can find it).
