I think that it is always a bit of a tricky area as to why God allows so much violence, suffering, hardship, despair, disorder, trouble etc. in this world, particularly, when cited as a reason for not believing in God. It seems that the news channels always want to concentrate on all the bad and evil things which are happening in our world and do not seem to be able to focus on all the massive amount of good things which are taking place. I may not understand why there is so much evil in the world but what gives me hope is an absolute belief that God the creator is ultimately in control of everything.
Good thoughts, gillian. Yes, as you said, there is so much good being done in the world . . . reflections of God’s goodness and grace. May we continue to emphasize the visible evidences of those things while also compassionately helping and listening to those who have been affected by evil and the hard stuff of life.
I never thought of it as God “allowing” things to happen. As a parent, I tried to raise my children as best as I could, with sets of rules to help them deal with the world around them. But eventually I had to let them go to make their own decisions in dealing with what life hands them. I feel God does that with us. Once Adam and Eve were expelled from the Garden of Eden, our world as a paradise was over. Then human beings were left to a world that was not paradise, because we didn’t deserve it. From that point on, mankind had to deal with a world that contained people who did not believe in the Word of God, and as a result did not see anything wrong with sin and evil. All we can do is try to make our corner of the world as filled with goodness and Godliness as we can muster. Our planet is definitely a sick place, and only with the return of our Savior will we see absolute change. Until that time, I know the best I can do is pray for the Love of Christ to come into people’s hearts and change them for the good. Since I know from the Bible that good will eventually conquer evil, that is what gives me hope.
jessie1, I like you how lifted up the idea of bringing Jesus’ kingdom to our corners of the world. Yes, we can bring His life and light right where we are!
My hope is in the Word. The Word says that our God is the Creator of Heaven and earth. He is the supreme wisdom. At the end of it all, He would have the last say because He was in the beginning and He shall be in the end as He is the Alpha and Omega!
