I am not a morning person, never have been. (Of course I am not a night person either. Catch me mid-day.) 🙂 Even if I was able to get a good night’s sleep, I just don’t like getting out of bed in the morning. God has been dealing with me on this little issue.
Imagine your spouse or good friend buys you a present and gives it to you. But you choose to not accept it. I’m doing the same thing when I grumble about getting up in the morning. Each and every day that God chooses to allow me to wake up is His gift to me. I want to accept His gifts. I appreciate His gifts. So I need to get out of bed and greet each new day as His precious, priceless gift.
Why is each day a gift?
“Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness” (Lamentations 3:22-23).
Each day is a gift because it’s like God wiping the slate clean. He gives us new mercies, new compassions. A new chance to worship Him. A new opportunity to witness and encourage someone. A new day to be with our family. Each day we need to wake up excited! Wake up and thank Him for a new day. Ask Him to forgive us of our mistakes of yesterday and ask Him to guide us in this new day.
Today is God’s gift to you. What will you do with it? —submitted by Jenifer Metzger, US

Jenifer, I am a morning person, but I have also not always seen each day as a gift. Battling cancer the past eight years has truly instilled in me an appreciation for each new day . . . each breath. As we enter each day with a heart of gratitude to Jesus, it colors everything we see and do in beautiful light. May we do that today!

Tom, you are right, we must be appreciative of each new day, His gift. I did not know you have battled cancer. I will be praying for you.

Thank you for the reminder. 🙂 I’m not a morning person either. It’s a good thing to start each morning with a word of thanks to God. x

Thank God for everything….can’t even express how thankful I am everyday:) if there is a word beside and beyond “Thank you,” which i could use to express my appreciation of Him, definitely i’ll use it…

What a great way to live, nepihca! I strive to follow Paul’s instruction, too: “Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus” (1 Thessalonians 5:18).

Your words are right on, Jenifer. A friend told me last week that we must think of our days as investments, and at the end of each day we should examine what things we bought. Did we spend our day on laughter and friendship and work and play and worship? Or did we gyp ourselves?
