I remember where I was sitting in the cramped living room of our apartment when Miska told me she was pregnant with our first son, Wyatt. I must have sat mute for several moments because Miska asked, “Are you okay? What are you thinking?” In theory, I wanted to be a dad someday, but it had seemed like a distant possibility. But here it was . . . I was going to be a dad, and I was dumbstruck.
Abraham was in a very different situation. He was an old man, and for decades he’d wanted to father a son with his wife, Sarah. But of course, now it appeared to be too late. His body was withered and Sarah, at age 90, was advanced in years as well. It seemed that there would be no children for them.
God appeared to Abraham, however, and told him the most ludicrous, unexpected news: “I will bless [Sarah] and give you a son from her! Yes, I will bless her richly, and she will become the mother of many nations. Kings of nations will be among her descendants” (Genesis 17:16). Abraham “bowed down to the ground, but he laughed to himself in disbelief” (Genesis 17:17). God must be mistaken, he thought; the idea was preposterous.
Of course, before too long, Abraham and Sarah did indeed have a son—Isaac. God revived their withered bodies and made them fertile again. He kept His promise.
Do any of God’s promises—such as “eternal life” (John 4:14) and a “satisfying life” (John 10:10)—seem so wonderful that you can’t help but laugh? Do any of God’s good and hopeful words seem impossible? Has it been difficult for you to hold on to belief in His kind intentions? Have you ever read a verse that contains a clear promise from Him—and couldn’t contain the laughter? If God has spoken, then hold on because His promises are true.

Our Faith Should be Greater than our Doubts and Fear.
Do not Doubt in the darkness what God revealed to you in the Light of Faith.
Easily said than done if we are not in the place of darkness of doubt.
We may be tempted to doubt but the good news is God can handle all of our doubts.
“Even though I walk
through the darkest valley,
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.” Psalm 23:4
In th darkest valley of fear and doubt our Hope is in God not on us or on our situation for He is always with us. If we look in ourself we will in distress but if look on who God is we will be at rest.
Focus on who God is, He is Faithful, He has a plans and future for us, His thoughts and ways are higher than us.
If we let doubts consumes us we will begin to sink in the waves of doubt.
Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?” Matthew 14:31
If we focus on Jesus we can walk over the water but if we focus on the winds and waves of doubt it will consumes us.
Rather we will be still and know God.
Numbers 23:19
God is not human, that he should lie,
not a human being, that he should change his mind.
Does he speak and then not act?
Does he promise and not fulfill?
1 Thessalonians 5:24
He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it.
For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, in Him it is always Yes. For all the promises of God find their Yes in him. That is why it is through him that we utter our Amen to God for his glory. 1 Cor 1:19-20
In times of doubt choose to delight and desire God. For our Faith is stronger than our fear.
Psalms 37:4
Delight yourself in the LORD,
and he will give you the desires of your heart.
God will give you
you
strength for
every battle, wisdom
for
every
decision, peace
that surpasses
understanding.
Faith in God
changes
everything.
Sometimes God
will put a
Goliath in your
life, for you to
find the David
within you.
Who through faith conquered kingdoms, administered justice, and gained what was promised;…whose weakness was turned to strength; and who became powerful in battle and routed foreign armies.
Hebrews 11:33-34
For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.
2 Timothy 1:7
“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”
2 Corinthians 12:9
With him is an arm of flesh, but with us is the Lord our God, to help us and to fight our battles.
2 Chronicles 32:8

Hi Winn: I would think that, as you described, the first time you heard the news of being a dad it was a little stunning. After you collected your thoughts and placed life in perspective, you soon approach the thought with anticipation and joy, and like the picture maybe laughed from time to time. I have always wondered about this portion of the couple in our passage today. Abraham laughed as Sarah did later, there must have been a difference as to how it was held in the soul. On their defense many of the early saints forged faith without any points of reference or “support group” to rely on. It was the pure raw relationship hammered out by God and His promises. It shouldn’t too much for us, but sometimes it takes a little time for a promise to fit. Just like the news of being a dad. I think God has some patience here, but nevertheless, the promise will be true, because God said it. So, it is what God said, and who God is. Thanks Winn, great 4th

God is God and there is no other. He is the creator & the Sustainer of all. Anything else is a lie or an illusion. All through the Bible & life we see miracles of God. So it is amazing that we will not believe that He can’t do something. But also we need to acknowledge Who God is when we ask and understand God’s Will be done whether we understand it or agree with it, He is God and has a plan. He is God and does not have to explain anything. I know that through the Cross He is a Loving God and I can accept whatever His Will is. I can Trust Him, This is Faith in Him, faith in anything else is hopeless & empty. Sometimes God uses people & or things as vessels. All Glory needs to go to God. +>i

Winn, I’m always amazed when I read these accounts of how the venerable saints of scripture reacted to God’s thoughts, words, and deeds in their very human lives. In the case of Abraham and Sarah we can contemplate if their laughter simply was one of disbelief, or were there tinges of thinly-veiled thoughts of derision coursing through their souls? The recollection of that laughter no doubt was far removed from Abraham’s mind some years later as he was poised to lift the knife to sacrifice Isaac until the voice of God changed the course of history. Those who abide in true faith will be open to hearing God’s divine revelation for them.

This particular passage doesn’t make me laugh it makes me happy for them and sad for me because we are in the same situation, although I am not 90. I pray for forgiveness and pregnancy everyday, although I have all but given up. There is that tiny spark of hope that refuses to quit inside me. I pray for strength to stop making bad, deliberate decisions that would hurt other people. I ask Him to help me fix the ones I have already made. I don’t want to go back to jail ever..one time was enough but I am weak and easily go down the wrong path. What it boils down to is maybe I don’t deserve to be pregnant but the Word talks of forgiveness and love and chances.

Dear Kimberly, God wants good for you, far more than you even want it for yourself. Be loved, believe that you are loved. Because it is absolutely true.
