Are we there yet?” This timeless question could either trigger a benevolent smile or produce a scowl on the face of a harassed and patience-worn parent. Like a small child, we want what we want, and we want it now. I can only imagine how Noah felt each time he peered hopefully out of the ark, only to see the dove he’d sent to find dry land returning to the vessel. Yet another seven days . . .
More than a year had gone by since the springs of the great deep had burst forth and the floodgates of heaven were unleashed on earth (Genesis 7:11). A world that had never before experienced rain was now completely submerged. The deluge itself lasted only 40 days. Drying out, however, was another matter. God had been very vocal when commissioning the ark. He provided specific construction instructions and guidelines for who and what should enter. But now He was silent. Noah and his family waited and then waited some more. Had God forgotten them?
While they waited and wondered, God remembered and sent a wind to recede the waters (Genesis 8:1). Though Noah and his family didn’t know it, God was working on their behalf to restore order. Noah’s faith must have been bolstered when the ark finally came to rest on a mountain. He must have been thrilled when the dove finally didn’t return. But he waited until God spoke and told him to leave the ark (Genesis 8:16). His patience and trust were rewarded with a renewed world—one memorialized by rainbows (Genesis 9:13).
Today’s culture of instant gratification puts us in conflict with God’s timing. If Noah had taken matters into his own hands, he may have found himself sinking in deep waters. When God seems silent, it’s time for us to wait and trust him to sort things out in a way we never could. He’s always worth the wait!

Hi Remi. Noah was just one of those guys. Probably someone you would want to be a mentor. As you mention in your post, children often ask those very anxious questions. As they grow older they understand the equation of time and results, especially when it comes to travel. When they reach the age of driving you can’t get them out of the car. It marks the maturity and faith Noah had grown, after all, he completed years of a massive work project without any signs of how it was going to work. The man was totally invested in obedience to God faith and patience had been a mark of the relationship and Noah found it true at every point in his life. It is the balance of maturity and faith that will cause us to walk in admiring obedience. We find the reward of patience is much greater than whining for selfish results. A good reminder. Thanks Remi

Hello Gary,
I love how you put it – “the balance of faith and maturity will cause us to walk in admiring obedience.” It’s not often that obedience is associated with admiration – we typically view it as something forced upon us, or which we have to endure patiently. Yet God is more than worthy of our admiration!! Thank you so much for this reminder 🙂
Be blessed,
Remi

Amen, Sim Jing Ying – may we all learn to adopt this perspective and rest quietly in our Father’s hands.
Be blessed!

I don’t lose patience when God doesn’t seems to answer fast enough. I can learn to trust His time more fully by reminding myself that to him a thousand days seems to Him like a single day and a single day a thousand days to Him, so be happy with what you have already and patient with what you don’t have as you enjoy your life in the now.

I like your closing statement, Remi. It speaks to me about the importance of patient endurance. The church in Philadelphia was commended for that very attribute, and was promised to be kept from the hour of trial (Rev 3:10). As far as the instant gratification crowd is concerned, can we all pray that those outside the faith realize their need for Christ with the same sense of immediacy? If there ever was a gotta-have-it-now, it’s Jesus!

This is a timely word for me, Remi! I’ve walked with the Lord long enough to know & understand the importance of following and not leading. That doesn’t mean; however, that I’m not tempted to assume the lead when He doesn’t show up when I think he should, so reminders like yours are much appreciated to keep us from stepping out when and where we should not. What a mighty gift we have in the faith that God has gifted us with. Not only does it come with blessing, but also with peace and assurance that God’s way will always be, as you’ve said, BEST. This state of mind and heart will also result in living, as sim jing ying says, for today, without fretting over the past or worrying about the future. Praise His Holy Name!!!

While recently doing a Bible Study, I decided to compile a comprehensive list of all of the sins, shortcomings, and “missings of the mark” that the New Testament identifies as in one way or another, disqualifying practitioners from meeting with God’s approval.
