George Mallory was an English mountaineer who was last seen heading toward the summit of Mount Everest in June 1924. It’s possible he actually reached its peak but succumbed to the weather on the way down. We’ll never know what happened, for the details passed with the great explorer. Mallory was once asked why he wanted to climb Everest. His answer was simply, “Because it’s there!” This may make no sense to most people, but to a mountaineer it is perfectly logical. Climbing the mountain is something to strive toward that’s an end in itself. The impressive peak is all the fuel Mallory and countless other mountaineers have ever needed.
As we read chapter 11 of Hebrews, the writer extols the impressive faith of many who went before him. Then in chapter 12 he exhorts us all to pursue a number of spiritual practices—spurring us on and fueling our walk. He encourages us to look back at the examples of others, but not to review our past failings and sins (Hebrews 12:1). He implores us to keep going and not give up by keeping our focus on Jesus (Hebrews 12:2).
Just as Mallory’s eyes were set on the great mountain, so ours are to be set on our matchless, majestic God. The writer also encourages us by stating that Jesus started our faith and He will complete the work (Hebrews 12:2; Philippians 1:6). Finally, we’re to consider Jesus’ example, realizing that He endured so much more than us and will therefore enable us to bear our own burdens by His strength (Hebrews 12:3-4).
When mountaineers grow weary, they look at the goal—at the summit—and climb on. When we struggle like those before us, we can trust in Jesus who has lifted us to the greatest heights.

thinking of goals…..just as the mountaineer’s goal is ever before him and fuels his passion, the christian’s goal is ever before him “weather” climbing to the summit or heading into the valley. His foot will never slip or stumble, He Is the Great Sherpa.

street, it’s amazing to realize that God has given us the Holy Spirit to comfort, counsel, and convict us as we face the mountains of life. May we yield to the Spirit today!

Over two thousand years ago the Word made flesh made the arduous ascent upon Mount Calvary. It was a climb only the Son of God could undertake as it came with the unfathomable weight of sin from ages past, present, and future. As we encounter problems that pale by comparison, let us take Russell’s words to heart and lift our eyes to the One who was lifted up for us.

Amen, minkjh. We have a Savior who has faced immensely more pain and hardship that we will ever face. And, yet, He came through the bitter, horrific experience of the cross with resurrection power and new life! May we walk in His power today—putting one foot in front of the other as move up the mountain.

This devotion puts me in mind of an old hymn called “Rough Side of the Mountain”:
Verse 1:
Oh Lord, I’m strivin’,
tryin’ to make it through this barren land,
but as I go from day to day,
I can hear my Savior say,
“trust me child, come on and hold my hand.”
Chorus
Verse 2:
I’m comin’ up Lord, although my burdens
sometime they press me down,
but if I can only keep this faith
I’ll have strength just to run this race;
I’m lookin’ for my starry crown.
Chorus
Verse 3:
This old race will be soon be over,
there’ll be no more race for me to run.
And I will stand before God’s throne,
all my heartaches will be gone,
I’ll hear my Savior say, “welcome home”.
Chorus
Chorus:
I’m comin’ up on the rough side of the mountain,
I must hold to God, His powerful hand.
I’m comin’ up on the rough side of the mountain,
I’m doin’ my best to make it in.
