Paul needed help. He said that his “ambition has always been to preach the Good News where the name of Christ has never been heard, rather than where a church has already been started by someone else” (Romans 15:20). This pioneering spirit lifted Paul’s eyes to the western edge of the Roman Empire. He had to go to Spain.
Since Rome was halfway to Spain, Paul planned to break his trip into two parts. He would travel to Rome, and after rest and fellowship with the church there, he’d continue on his way. Paul made arrangements for his journey by writing a letter (Romans) to the church in Rome.
We don’t know whether Paul ever made it to Spain. If he didn’t, then he died with an unfulfilled dream. Yet his effort was not wasted, for in the process of planning his trip Paul wrote the richest doctrinal book in the entire Bible. Our Christian faith would be impoverished without his epistle to the Romans.
Unrealized dreams can yield their own reward. You may feel that you’re spinning your wheels, that life has not turned out as you had hoped. But if you think about it, the simple act of pursuing your dream has already done much good.
Perhaps you never completed your education, yet you are better off for the classes you took than if you had never started. Maybe you were passed over for promotion, yet your quest for a certain job has sharpened your skills and made you a valuable employee. Your cure may not have come, yet your months of prayer and suffering have drawn you to God and softened your heart for others.
Dreams do much good, even (and perhaps especially) when they’re unfulfilled.

What is the unsatisfied longing of your life? Without giving up your dream, why not thank God right now for the good that has arisen from your pursuit?

Quite encouraging. Oftentimes, we can feel like failures if we haven’t accomplished some things we set out to do years ago. It’s refreshing to know that as we continue to wholeheartedly seek God’s will, He works through us. Of course, anything God does is done well. There is no failure in Him.
Thanks for sharing.

I thank God for this post. I have wrestled for a very long time that I only completed one year of college. Yet that one year enabled me to get a better job and rise in my profession because of it. So though my dream of a degree didn’t happen, I now know the “year” was a blessing from God in so many ways.
God has fulfilled many of my desires. The only one lacking is to have a Christian man as a husband and companion. In the absence of this dream, he has filled my life with male friendships that will probably last the rest of my life. So who am I to complain.
There was a time when drugs ruled my life and I lost everything, but I thank God even for those terrible dark circumstances because He enlarged my faith to realize that my God is a God of restoration. And He has indeed restored much. Maybe not as I had hoped for, but the restoration has met my needs and that is what is important.
Who am I to second guess God almighty, creator of heaven and earth? No, I continually remind myself that God’s grace is sufficient enough for me.

Lightweaver,
I hope you will get a chance to see this, although it is two days later. When I read your comment I couldn’t believe it, but your life has been my life as well. If I didn’t know better, I would have thought I was reading my very own comment.
Be encouraged as I am, and know that God has a plan for the both of us and we know that God works for the good of those who love Him.
And regarding your comment about a husband or companion. I believe God is working on and prepping a man for us as we type. And when we meet that person, we will know right away that he is the one. Because he will be sent by God!

Amen.
How beautiful this is to my ears. Everyday I keep tasting and seeing that the Lord is good. It’s so funny how sometimes as humans we think we can “outsmart God” or we can gain his blessings. The beauty of a blessing is that only God can provide it whether directly or through others. We don’t can’t gain things so that we can boast, but only through Him.
These last few months God has been running a theme of “Don’t Limit God” in my life. It’s crazy because everyday God shows me that message through others, through scripture, and more.
I praise God for everything that He has been doing in my life. I love how this devotion hit at the fact that life isn’t going to go our way but rather God’s way. Sometimes we won’s see the whole picture for a while, but God has it all under control. Sometimes out of a messy situation , God can create a learning situation.
I pray that everyone who reads this posting is blessed.
Blessings,
CJ

Thank you for your comments. As I reflect on this devotional, I’m reminded that often the process is just as important as the product. So if you’re in the middle of something you’re working on, don’t forget to look around and savor the ride!
